What to Watch For:
People infected with these new variants generally experience:

  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Mild cough
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Nasal congestion
  • Low-grade fever
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Gastrointestinal issues

Experts advise that while the loss of taste or smell is not prominent in these cases, anyone experiencing the above symptoms should closely monitor their oxygen levels, avoid crowded places, and consider taking an at-home antigen test or RT-PCR test at a certified facility. Symptoms typically subside within 3-4 days.

Who Is at Risk?
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified these variants as “under monitoring” with no severe health risks flagged so far. However, unvaccinated adults remain more vulnerable. Notably, children who were previously ineligible for vaccination might consider getting vaccinated upon turning 18.

Vaccination Coverage
Currently, more than 95% of eligible adults in India have received at least one dose, with nearly 75% having taken a booster shot. However, only 18% have received vaccines targeting the Omicron strain.

Kerala has reported the highest surge, with 273 cases this month alone. Internationally, the NB.1.8.1 variant has shown higher transmissibility among travelers in the US, especially in California, Washington, Virginia, and New York.

Experts continue to monitor the situation closely, urging everyone to stay alert and maintain health precautions.
