CPI Veteran Nallakannu Passes Away
Freedom fighter and Communist leader dies at 101 in Chennai
February 25, 2026: Veteran Communist leader and freedom fighter Nallakannu passed away in Chennai on February 25 at the age of 101. He had been undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for more than three weeks due to age-related ailments and breathing complications. Despite being on ventilator support, his health deteriorated in recent days. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and several leaders across party lines had visited or enquired about his condition during his hospitalisation.
Born in Srivaikundam in 1925, Nallakannu joined the Communist Party of India at the age of 18 and went on to dedicate over eight decades to public life. Known for his simple lifestyle and unwavering commitment to social justice, he championed the rights of workers and marginalised communities throughout his career. Even after stepping back from active politics due to age, he remained a respected moral voice within the party and Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
Tributes poured in from leaders, cadres and members of the public, who described him as a towering figure rooted in the ideals of the freedom struggle. His century-long life spanned colonial rule, independence and the evolution of democratic politics in the state. For many, his passing marks the end of an era defined by ideological conviction, humility and steadfast service to the working class.
