Delhi Airport’s Terminal 2 to Undergo Major Refurbishment Starting April

40-Year-Old Terminal to Close Temporarily for Modernization, Promising a World-Class Passenger Experience

New Delhi, January 10: Terminal 2 (T2) of Delhi Airport is set to undergo a comprehensive refurbishment starting April, with the modernization project expected to take approximately six months. The terminal, originally constructed 40 years ago by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), will be upgraded by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), led by GMR Airports Limited.

Key Upgrades for T2

The refurbishment aims to modernize the terminal, enhancing both passenger convenience and operational efficiency. The upgrades will include:

  • Passenger Boarding Bridges with autonomous docking technology, a first in India.
  • Modern ceilings and skylight designs for a visually appealing environment.
  • Advanced flooring and improved road connectivity for better access.

These enhancements are designed to accommodate the anticipated surge in domestic passenger traffic, with DIAL projecting the terminal will reach its maximum passenger capacity by FY 2025-26.

Temporary Closure and Impact

During the refurbishment, Terminal 2 will be temporarily closed for approximately 4 to 6 months, starting in the new fiscal year. To minimize disruptions, the newly developed Terminal 1 will absorb the additional passenger load, ensuring seamless operations.

“The refurbishment of the four-decade-old Terminal 2 is the need of the hour. We, at DIAL, are committed to enhancing the overall passenger experience by upgrading key infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, and elevating passenger comfort,” said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL.

Strategic Importance

The initiative is part of DIAL’s long-term strategy to establish Delhi Airport as a leading aviation hub for both domestic and international travellers. By modernizing T2, DIAL aims to cater to the evolving needs of passengers while ensuring the airport remains a top-tier facility in the global aviation sector.

Refurbishment works are expected to conclude by Q2 of FY 2025-26, marking a new chapter in Delhi Airport’s journey towards delivering a world-class travel experience.
