Delhi Braces for Blistering 42°C Heatwave as IMD Issues Red Alert for North India

Severe heatwave to grip Delhi and several northern states; IMD warns of temperature spikes up to 42°C by April 10.

April 5, 2025: New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for a severe heatwave across Delhi and several northern and central Indian states, forecasting temperatures to soar up to 42°C by April 10. The capital city is already witnessing rising temperatures, with peak heat expected to strike between April 6 and 7.

Regions including South Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh are also on high alert, with daytime temperatures expected to climb by 2 to 4°C in the coming days.

Unusually, heatwaves began appearing in India as early as February 27–28 this year, and the summer of 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most intense yet. The IMD had earlier warned that April to June would bring hotter-than-usual temperatures across much of central, eastern, and northwestern India.

Traditionally, India sees four to seven heatwave days during this period. However, 2025 could break that trend with prolonged high temperatures and multiple back-to-back heatwaves.

States likely to face a significant spike in heatwave days include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and northern parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh could face 10 to 11 heatwave days, posing serious challenges to health, agriculture, and infrastructure.

Authorities have urged residents to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid going outdoors during peak heat hours as India enters a critical phase of the summer season.
