The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for several states, including Delhi, as temperatures are set to soar across northern and western India. Delhi, currently at a comfortable 31°C, is expected to hit 40°C by the end of March, marking the season’s first major heatwave.

Severe heatwave conditions are also gripping Odisha, Jharkhand, Telangana, and West Bengal’s Gangetic plains, with temperatures significantly above normal levels.

IMD’s Travel Advisory for Heatwave-Prone Regions

The IMD has advised travelers and residents in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar to brace for extreme heat. Precautionary measures such as staying hydrated, wearing loose cotton clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours have been recommended.

However, while parts of India are sweltering under the heatwave, certain regions are experiencing rainfall and thunderstorms.


Where Will It Rain?

Northeastern statesAssam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh will see heavy rainfall for the next five days due to cyclonic circulation over Assam.

Coastal statesGujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh may experience sporadic showers.

Tamil Nadu – Moderate rainfall expected until March 22.

Puducherry & Karaikal – Light showers likely.

ChennaiPartially overcast skies expected.

Meanwhile, strong winds and scattered rain showers are expected in parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh, providing temporary relief from rising temperatures.


Precautions for Travelers and Residents

As temperatures rise, the IMD advises the following:

Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water and electrolyte-rich fluids.
Avoid Direct Sun Exposure – Limit outdoor activities between 12 PM and 4 PM.
Dress Smartly – Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothes.
Use Sunscreen & Sunglasses – Protect yourself from UV radiation.
Travel with Essentials – If traveling, carry a water bottle, ORS, and an umbrella.

With Delhi and other regions gearing up for extreme temperatures, residents and travelers must stay alert and follow safety measures to prevent heat exhaustion and dehydration.
