Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During Public Event, BJP Fumes

A man, disguised as a complainant, reportedly slapped and pulled the hair of the Chief Minister at her Civil Lines residence. The accused has been taken into police custody, and an investigation is underway.

August 20, 2025: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday morning during a weekly public grievance hearing at her official residence in Civil Lines.

According to police sources and political leaders, a man approached the Chief Minister, allegedly slapped her, and pulled her hair before he was overpowered by security personnel.

The incident occurred during the routine ‘Jan Sunwai’ program, an open forum where the Chief Minister meets with citizens to address their concerns. Sources state that a man, said to be in his mid-30s, first handed over some documents to the Chief Minister before allegedly engaging in a physical altercation. Reports from news agencies also suggest that a heavy object was hurled at her, causing her to fall.

Following the attack, the Chief Minister was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical examination. Delhi Police confirmed that the attacker, who had disguised himself as a complainant, was immediately taken into custody and is being interrogated at Civil Lines Police Station. The police have launched a formal inquiry to ascertain the motive behind the assault and have deployed additional forces to secure the Chief Minister’s residence. As of now, an official statement from the police is awaited.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from across the political spectrum. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva “strongly condemned” the attack, calling it a “serious breach of security” and demanding a thorough investigation. “Such a shameful act of violence should not be tolerated,” a statement from the Delhi BJP read.

The Delhi Congress chief, Devender Yadav, also condemned the incident, questioning the state of law and order in the national capital. “If the Chief Minister of Delhi is not safe, how can a common woman be safe?” he stated, calling the event “very unfortunate.”

Sources indicate that court-related documents were found in the accused’s possession, though the exact reason for his actions has yet to be officially determined. The unexpected assault has raised serious concerns over the security arrangements for political leaders during public interactions, prompting calls for immediate reforms.
