February 17, 2025: A 4.0 magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi-NCR early Monday morning, triggering panic among residents. The tremors, felt around 5:36 AM, were stronger than expected due to the quake’s shallow depth of just 5 km. In response, the Central government issued a warning about potential aftershocks, urging people to remain cautious.

“Following the earthquake tremors felt this morning in and around Delhi at about 5:36 AM, professional experts and officials from the Ministry of Earth Sciences are constantly monitoring the situation. PM Modi’s Message to Delhi Residents
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the situation, urging people to follow safety protocols and remain alert.
“Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” PM Modi posted on X.
What Caused the Strong Tremors?
Despite its low magnitude, the earthquake was strongly felt across Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter was located 9 km east of New Delhi (Lat: 28.59°N & Long: 77.16°E).
Experts explain that the shallow depth of 5 km allowed seismic waves to travel with more intensity, causing a loud rumbling sound and stronger-than-usual tremors for a 4.0 magnitude earthquake.

Authorities have advised the public to:
