The capital city of Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) faced severe disruptions today as heavy rainfall wreaked havoc, causing significant traffic jams, stranding vehicles, and leading to the collapse of a road near Aurobindo Marg.
Starting in the early hours of the morning, the relentless downpour continued throughout the day, flooding streets and causing waterlogging in various parts of the city. Commuters found themselves stuck in long traffic jams, with many vehicles stranded in knee-deep water.
One of the most severe incidents occurred near Aurobindo Marg, where a section of the road caved in due to the incessant rain. This major road collapse resulted in massive traffic bottlenecks, leaving several vehicles immobile and causing further chaos in an already disrupted city.
“I’ve been stuck here for over an hour. The rain has been relentless, and now the road has caved in. It’s causing a lot of confusion and delay,” said one frustrated commuter.
The heavy rains led to severe waterlogging across major roads including Ring Road, NH8, and the stretch near AIIMS. The Delhi Traffic Police and emergency services have been working around the clock to manage the situation, but the sheer volume of water has made travel extremely challenging.
Statement from Delhi Traffic Police Spokesperson: “We urge all residents to remain cautious and avoid traveling on waterlogged roads. Our teams are on the ground, coordinating with municipal authorities to clear the water and ensure the safety of all commuters.”
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), more rain is expected over the next few days, with heavy showers predicted to continue. The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors and take necessary precautions. Temperatures are expected to remain cool, with highs of 34°C and lows of 27°C. Thunderstorms and moderate rain will likely persist, causing potential disruptions.
The IMD noted that conditions are favorable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon into more parts of North India, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu over the next two to three days.
The Delhi government has issued advisories urging residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay away from waterlogged areas. Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) teams are working to clear clogged drains and manage the overflow of water to mitigate further disruptions.
As Delhi grapples with the severe weather, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and cautious. The city’s infrastructure is being put to the test, and the authorities are working tirelessly to manage the crisis. Stay tuned for further updates and follow safety guidelines to navigate through this challenging time.
