An intense monsoon spell on Wednesday evening brought parts of Delhi-NCR to a standstill, submerging streets, stranding commuters, and diverting flights amid widespread traffic chaos.

A sudden and intense downpour during Wednesday evening’s rush hour wreaked havoc across Delhi, flooding arterial roads and disrupting air and road traffic. The monsoon’s northward shift brought knee-deep water, overflowing drains, and massive gridlocks across the National Capital Region (NCR), while over 300 flights were delayed and six diverted.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert by 6:30pm after the rains, which began with little warning, drenched different parts of Delhi unevenly—Najafgarh saw 60mm of rain, while Safdarjung recorded just 1.4mm.

Delhi Traffic Police deployed additional personnel and mobile pumps to clear waterlogged zones. However, congestion persisted in several pockets until midnight.
🛫 Flights Disrupted at IGI Airport:
The Indira Gandhi International Airport remained operational but advised travelers to opt for Delhi Metro. Airlines like IndiGo issued advisories due to road congestion. At least six flights were diverted—two to Lucknow and four to Jaipur. Data from Flightradar24 showed over 300 flights delayed with average delays of 38 minutes.
