The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert by 6:30pm after the rains, which began with little warning, drenched different parts of Delhi unevenly—Najafgarh saw 60mm of rain, while Safdarjung recorded just 1.4mm.

Delhi Traffic Police deployed additional personnel and mobile pumps to clear waterlogged zones. However, congestion persisted in several pockets until midnight.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport remained operational but advised travelers to opt for Delhi Metro. Airlines like IndiGo issued advisories due to road congestion. At least six flights were diverted—two to Lucknow and four to Jaipur. Data from Flightradar24 showed over 300 flights delayed with average delays of 38 minutes.
The rain was triggered by upper air cyclonic circulations over north Haryana and northwest UP, according to IMD scientist Naresh Kumar. The monsoon trough will remain near Delhi till Thursday before shifting, suggesting a dip in rainfall activity over the weekend.
PWD Minister Parvesh Verma inspected Minto Bridge, known for chronic waterlogging, and claimed major hotspots like ITO, Moolchand, and Minto Bridge have been resolved. Despite this, visuals from across the city told a different story with several roads submerged.
While Delhi received heavy showers on Wednesday, the overall July rainfall remains far below normal. As of now, the city has received only 19.6mm against the monthly average of 209.7mm.
