Severe thunderstorms and a dust storm swept through Delhi-NCR early Friday, bringing with them heavy rainfall, widespread flight disruptions, and tragic consequences. Four people—a woman and her three children—lost their lives after a tree collapsed onto their home in Dwarka due to high-speed winds.

The storm, which began with strong gusts and thick dust clouds, led to a significant drop in temperature, with Delhi recording 19.8°C early morning, a sharp contrast to the 38.1°C maximum just a day prior.


✈️ Flight Operations Disrupted

Flight movement at Indira Gandhi International Airport was badly affected, with average delays of 21 minutes for arrivals and 61 minutes for departures, according to FlightRadar.
Several flights—including those from Bangalore and Pune to Delhi—were diverted to Jaipur and Ahmedabad.

“Some of our flights to and from Delhi are being delayed or diverted… We are doing our best to minimize disruptions,” said Air India on X.

Over 20 departing flights were running behind schedule. Passengers were advised to check with airlines before heading to the airport.

🌧️ City Hit By Waterlogging, Fallen Trees

Waterlogging was reported in several major areas, including:

  • Minto Road
  • Dwarka
  • Khanpur
  • Lajpat Nagar
  • Moti Bagh
  • South Extension Ring Road

Visuals showed submerged vehicles and stranded commuters struggling through flooded underpasses.

The strong winds—reported at 70–80 kmph—uprooted trees and snapped branches across the city, though total damage assessment is still pending.


⚠️ IMD Issues Yellow Alert, More Rain Likely

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi till Saturday, warning of:

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Thunderstorms
  • Squally winds up to 80 kmph

The IMD noted a rare occurrence of hailstorms in some areas of Delhi-NCR and warned of more rain across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh.

Forecasts for May suggest above-normal rainfall in North India, which could help prevent the kind of heatwave spikes witnessed in May 2024.
