Delhi on High Alert: Government Cancels Staff Leave, Boosts Security Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
New Delhi | May 9, 2025 –
The national capital has been placed under high alert following escalating hostilities between India and Pakistan after Operation Sindoor. In a late-night order, the Delhi government cancelled all leaves for its employees until further notice, signaling a heightened state of readiness amid mounting military activity along the western border.

Vigilance has been ramped up across the city. Police issued evacuation orders at India Gate, a key public landmark, and traffic movement was regulated as a precaution. Public announcements warned civilians to vacate the area immediately.
“Night vigil has been intensified and extra forces will be deployed in every sensitive zone,” said a senior police officer.
All District Magistrates convened emergency preparedness meetings with subordinates to assess healthcare, disaster response, and contingency planning. Officials from East Delhi confirmed they are evaluating response gaps and streamlining quick-reaction protocols.
Simultaneously, Delhi Police’s special commissioners and deputy commissioners across all 15 districts were instructed to monitor law and order closely. Key areas like metro stations, malls, markets, hotels, residential colonies, and airports are under close surveillance with additional deployment of paramilitary forces.
“All DCPs have briefed their ACPs and SHOs. Bomb disposal teams have conducted anti-sabotage checks in public spaces,” said a police source.
The Delhi Metro’s Mayur Vihar Phase-1 station underwent a full security audit by CISF, with 41 functional CCTV cameras and 9 CISF officers deployed per shift.
“This is part of broader anti-terror initiatives across the city,” said DCP (East) Abhishek Dhania.
Meanwhile, DCP (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary confirmed that bomb disposal squads (BDS) were conducting anti-sabotage checks across malls, hotels, and high-footfall zones.

Vehicle checks at Delhi’s border entry points have been intensified to screen potential threats, and patrols are ongoing in sensitive corridors connecting Delhi to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
The stepped-up security follows Pakistan’s missile and drone strikes aimed at 15 Indian cities on May 8. Though intercepted by Indian air defences, the attempted attacks prompted Delhi to reinforce readiness. One Pakistani air defence system was destroyed in Lahore, intensifying the standoff.
