To ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety during the Muharram procession on July 6 and Kanwar Yatra from July 12 to 22, Delhi Police has announced comprehensive traffic arrangements across the city.
New Delhi [India], July 5 – With Muharram processions scheduled for July 6 and the annual Kanwar Yatra beginning July 12, the Delhi Police has rolled out a detailed traffic management plan to maintain order, minimize public inconvenience, and ensure safety throughout the capital. The announcement was made by Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta, who confirmed that diversions and on-ground monitoring will be implemented across key routes during both religious events.
As the national capital gears up for two significant religious processions—Muharram and the Kanwar Yatra—the Delhi Police has put in place an elaborate traffic regulation plan to manage vehicular flow and ensure public safety.
Speaking to ANI, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Dinesh Kumar Gupta, detailed the preparations being made to accommodate these events without causing major disruptions for daily commuters.
“Muharram will be observed on July 6 in Delhi. For this, we have implemented a comprehensive traffic management plan,” Gupta said. “Our primary goal is to provide diversions strategically, ensuring the procession goes smoothly while minimizing inconvenience to the general public. All field officers will be deployed to monitor the situation closely.”
Muharram marks a day of mourning for Shia Muslims, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. The event is observed with large processions, tazias, and religious rituals. In India, not only do the 7–8 crore Shia Muslims participate in these rituals, but also people from other faiths join to express solidarity and reverence.
To support this large-scale event, police personnel will remain stationed across major junctions and procession routes, with real-time monitoring to avoid congestion or safety breaches.
In addition to Muharram, Delhi Police is also preparing for the Kanwar Yatra, a massive annual Hindu pilgrimage during which Kanwariyas—devotees of Lord Shiva—walk hundreds of kilometers carrying holy water from sacred rivers to offer at Shiva temples.
“Preparations for the Kanwar Yatra have been scheduled from July 12 to July 22,” Gupta said. “We have already mapped out the main Kanwar routes, and barricades will be placed to ensure devotees do not stray onto primary traffic roads. Our field officers will provide required diversions, especially on the final two days when the crowd is at its peak.”
The Kanwar Yatra is rooted in mythology, with links to Lord Parshuram, considered an avatar of Lord Vishnu and a devout follower of Lord Shiva. Today, lakhs of devotees from across India observe fasting, chant devotional songs, and undertake arduous journeys by foot in one of the most spiritually significant Hindu events of the year.
Delhi Police has requested both residents and commuters to cooperate during these days, follow real-time traffic advisories via digital platforms, and use alternate routes when necessary. Authorities also advised citizens to plan their travels in advance and keep emergency numbers handy.
These efforts reflect a broader mission to maintain the city’s peace and communal harmony during sensitive and high-footfall religious events.
