Dense Fog Disrupts Flights, Trains Across North India; Visibility and Temperatures Plunge

Severe weather conditions affect flight schedules, train operations, and daily life as dense fog blankets North India, including Delhi, Lucknow, and Amritsar.

January 3, 2025: New Delhi: Dense fog and plummeting temperatures have severely impacted flight and train operations across North India, with Delhi, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Amritsar, and Guwahati being the most affected regions. Poor visibility caused multiple delays and cancellations of flights and trains, disrupting travel plans for thousands.

Impact on Flights:

  • Flights from SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Air India reported significant delays at Delhi Airport.
  • An average delay of 5 minutes for arrivals and 11 minutes for departures was recorded, according to FlightRadar24.
  • Airlines, including IndiGo, issued advisories urging passengers to check flight schedules before heading to the airport.
  • SpiceJet confirmed disruptions for flights to and from Amritsar and Guwahati due to poor visibility.

Train Operations Affected:

  • Trains arriving and departing from Delhi experienced delays, with some routes operating under revised schedules.
  • Similar disruptions were reported in Amritsar, Lucknow, and other northern railway zones.

Weather and Air Quality:

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded Delhi’s maximum temperature at 16°C and minimum at 7.6°C.
  • The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lodhi Road, Delhi, stood at 309 (‘Very Poor’ category).
  • Fog is expected to persist until January 8, with light rain likely on January 6.

Regional Warnings and Forecast:

The IMD issued Nowcast warnings for dense to very dense fog across:

  • Delhi, Rajasthan (Kota, Bundi, Sikar), Punjab (Amritsar, Tarn Taran), and Haryana (Kurukshetra, Panchkula).
  • Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh are expected to experience light rain and snowfall in select regions.

Schools Closed Due to Cold Wave:

In Gautam Buddh Nagar, authorities suspended classes for students up to Grade 8 in response to the ongoing cold wave conditions.

The situation remains critical as weather experts predict continued disruptions over the coming days, urging travellers and residents to exercise caution and stay updated with travel advisories.
