Dense Fog Triggers 50-Vehicle Pile-Ups on Delhi-Meerut, Eastern Peripheral Expressways
January 29, 2025: Ghaziabad: Dense fog led to two massive pile-ups involving around 50 vehicles on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) in Ghaziabad on Wednesday morning, leaving five people injured. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, and all injured individuals are in stable condition, according to police.

The first accident occurred around 7:30 am on the Meerut-Ghaziabad carriageway of the DME near the Bhojpur police station area, approximately 2 kilometers from the Hawa Hawai restaurant. A bus collided with a stationary vehicle, setting off a chain reaction that led to a pile-up involving 30-35 vehicles, primarily cars.

“Three people were injured in the DME pile-up and were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment,” said Surendra Nath Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural Zone).
A passenger traveling from Roorkee, whose vehicle was involved in the accident, recounted the chaos: “We applied brakes after spotting a stationary bus ahead, but the cars following us couldn’t stop in time. This caused a domino effect, leading to a pile-up of 25-30 vehicles. My sister and I missed an important interview in Delhi due to this.”

The second incident occurred on the Baghpat-Duhai carriageway of the EPE, where 20-25 vehicles collided due to similar fog-induced low visibility. “Two people sustained minor injuries in this accident,” said Siddharth Gautam, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Masuri-Muradnagar Circle).
Cause and Aftermath
Both accidents were attributed to dense fog, which severely reduced visibility on the expressway stretches. Police and emergency services cleared the roads after the incidents, and traffic was restored. Authorities have advised drivers to exercise caution and maintain safe distances in foggy conditions to prevent such accidents.
