Diwali 2024 Celebrations Set for November 1

New Delhi, October 30, 2024:This year, the celebration of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, will be observed on November 1, 2024, across most parts of India. The Government of India has confirmed this date following extensive consultations with scholars and religious authorities, resolving initial confusion caused by the Amavasya Tithi (new moon phase) which extends from the evening of October 31 to November 1.

The unique timing of the Amavasya Tithi—starting at 3:55 PM on October 31 and ending at 6:15 PM on November 1—led to debates on whether Diwali should be celebrated on October 31, during the Pradosh Kaal (early evening period), or on November 1. However, over 150 astrologers and scholars gathered in Indore concluded that Diwali should take place on November 1, with Lakshmi Puja, the central ritual of Diwali, observed during this date’s auspicious Swati Nakshatra

The Decision Process

As part of the consultations, religious texts were referenced, indicating that when Amavasya overlaps two days, Deepavali should be celebrated on the latter. Consequently, scholars and authorities decided that this year’s main Diwali rituals would best align with November 1. This aligns with cultural beliefs that prioritize conducting Lakshmi Puja under the most favorable astrological conditions, which many believe will bring prosperity and blessings for the year to come.

Local Variances in Celebration

Despite the national recommendation, some regions may still observe Diwali-related customs on October 31 due to longstanding traditions or local interpretations of the Tithi. However, across major cities and in popular pilgrimage sites, such as Ayodhya, Diwali festivities will culminate on November 1, highlighted by grand displays of lights, decorations, and communal gatherings.

Diwali Schedule 2024

With the finalized date, here is the schedule for the key Diwali events:

  • Dhanteras: October 29
  • Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali): October 30
  • Main Diwali (Lakshmi Puja): November 1
  • Govardhan Puja: November 2
  • Bhai Dooj: November 3

This year, the six-day-long festival period ensures a prolonged celebration of light, joy, and familial connections across India.

As preparations continue, the confirmed date offers clarity for families and communities across India to celebrate the festival together, upholding the rich traditions that Diwali brings each year.
