EC to Roll Out Voter List Revision Nationwide

Chief Election Commissioner calls “pure” electoral rolls the foundation of democracy ahead of National Voters’ Day

January 25, 2026: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday said the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will soon be rolled out in the remaining states, stressing that “pure” voter lists are the bedrock of a strong democracy. Speaking on the eve of the Election Commission’s foundation day, also observed as National Voters’ Day, Kumar said the exercise is currently being conducted smoothly in 12 states and Union territories, with Bihar having already completed the process and a separate special revision underway in Assam.

Highlighting the success of the initiative, Kumar said the credibility of the Bihar revision was underscored by the fact that not a single appeal was filed against the final electoral roll. He noted that elections conducted on this robust foundation recorded a historic voter turnout of 67.13 per cent — the highest since 1951 — with women voters registering an unprecedented participation rate of 71.78 per cent.

The chief election commissioner also appealed to citizens, especially young voters, to actively participate in the democratic process. Urging them to vote without fail, Kumar called on the youth to combat misinformation and false narratives by staying informed about electoral processes and the Election Commission’s initiatives. The Election Commission of India was established on January 25, 1950, a day that has been celebrated as National Voters’ Day for the past 16 years.
