Agency alleges interference by Mamata Banerjee in coal scam probe
January 11, 2026: The Enforcement Directorate has approached the Supreme Court alleging obstruction and interference by the West Bengal government, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during searches at the I-PAC office and the residence of its director Pratik Jain in connection with the coal pilferage scam. The ED claimed Banerjee entered the raid sites and removed key documents and electronic devices, compromising the investigation.
The agency said the chief minister’s presence had an intimidating effect on officials and hampered its ability to function independently. Citing repeated non-cooperation by the state administration, the ED has sought directions for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe, arguing that a neutral agency is required. The plea is expected to be mentioned for urgent hearing on Monday.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court seeking a hearing before any order is passed. The Trinamool Congress has denied the allegations, accused the ED of overreach, and claimed the raids targeted confidential election strategy material. The state police have also registered an FIR against ED officers.
