Veteran Congress leader and five-time MP passes away at 81
March 10, 2026: Veteran Congress leader and former Union minister Biren Singh Engti passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday. He was 81. A party spokesperson said Engti had been brought to the city for treatment from his residence in Diphu, where his mortal remains were later taken for people to pay their last respects.
Engti was a five-time Member of Parliament from the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency and served as a minister of state in the government of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. A prominent leader from Karbi Anglong, he first entered the Lok Sabha in the 1970s and won his last parliamentary election in 2014. He also served as the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.
Condoling his death, Himanta Biswa Sarma said Engti’s passing was a great loss for Assam and remembered his contributions to the development of the hill regions. Gaurav Gogoi also expressed grief, calling the loss irreparable for the state’s political landscape. Gogoi, son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, recalled his family’s long association with the veteran leader.
