‘Feels Like Shimla’: Delhites React as Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Lash Delhi-NCR

Residents share dramatic visuals and witty posts as strong winds, thunder, and rainfall offer a cool respite from the scorching summer heat.

May 25, 2025: Delhi-NCR was engulfed in heavy rain and thunderstorms late Saturday night, creating scenes that residents likened to “Shimla weather” and a “storm of the decade” on social media. The downpour and powerful winds brought much-needed relief from the oppressive heat, but also unleashed chaos across the region.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph were reported throughout Delhi and adjoining areas. Many residents shared videos and updates, describing the sudden change in weather as both thrilling and a little terrifying.

“Dear weather gods, if you want to make it rain in Delhi, you can do so without the scary storms that sound like pralay,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter), capturing the mixed feelings of awe and anxiety.

Another Delhi resident posted, “Mad rain in Delhi rn, my backyard is battling for its survival,” as the intense winds threatened to tear apart gardens and balconies.

One social media user from Gurugram called it the “much anticipated storm of the decade,” tweeting, “Captured this in sector 57, #Gurgaon. Winds howling.. crazy rain intensity of 3mm/min, 25-30mm in various areas in no time! A similar storm is affecting rest of #Delhi #Noida #Ghaziabad #Faridabad as well. Praying for everyone’s safety.”

East Delhi also reported intense downpours, with temperatures dropping dramatically. “Intense rains and winds with lightning in East Delhi. Temp dropped from 31.8°C to 23.1°C in just 30 mins. Rainfall accumulation: 29mm till now,” another user wrote.

The IMD advised residents to stay indoors and avoid taking shelter under trees or in open fields. “Residents are advised to take necessary precautions,” the IMD warned.

Despite the dramatic weather, the national capital saw the minimum temperature drop to 28.4 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees below the seasonal average. The sudden cool wave was welcomed by many, as one user noted: “Feels like Shimla!”
