Himanta Biswa Sarma escalates attack as complaint filed against Pawan Khera ahead of polls
April 7, 2026: Police reached the residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera after an FIR was filed against him by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. The complaint, confirmed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accuses Khera of making “baseless allegations” regarding multiple passports and overseas assets. The development has further intensified the political atmosphere ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections in Assam.
Sarma also alleged that material used by Congress leaders in recent press briefings was sourced from Pakistani social media groups, suggesting possible attempts to influence the state’s electoral process. Referring to press conferences addressed by Khera and Gaurav Gogoi in Delhi and Guwahati, the Chief Minister claimed that similar narratives have appeared in Pakistani media discussions focusing on Assam elections in recent days.
On the legal front, Sarma said the FIR was lodged over what he termed fabricated claims, warning that using forged documents to sway public opinion could invite strict legal action. He added that authorities are expected to examine the alleged foreign links and take appropriate steps as per the law, as the political confrontation continues to escalate in the run-up to polling.
