Flames on Rails: Passenger’s Act Halts Pune Train

June 16, 2025: A minor fire broke out onboard the Daund-Pune shuttle train on Monday morning after a passenger allegedly tossed a lit bidi (hand-rolled cigarette) into a dustbin inside the lavatory, causing brief panic among passengers. The incident occurred around 8 AM near Yavat in Pune district.

According to the Daund railway police, the blaze was triggered when the cigarette ignited paper waste in the bin. Smoke began billowing from the toilet, alarming travelers, though the coach had relatively few passengers at the time.

Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported.

A 55-year-old man, believed to be mentally unstable, was detained and handed over to the police for questioning, a railway spokesperson said.

The train halted at Yavat station for around 20 minutes due to the incident, before resuming its journey.

The Daund-Pune DEMU train, a daily shuttle service, covers a 75-km stretch with stops at seven stations in between.

Railway authorities have urged passengers to refrain from smoking and remain alert to avoid such dangerous incidents in the future.
