New Delhi, December 27: India mourns the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, who passed away on Thursday evening at AIIMS, Delhi, at the age of 92, due to age-related health complications.

National Mourning Declared

Sources confirmed that all government programs scheduled for Friday have been canceled, and a seven-day national mourning has been declared across the country. The Union Cabinet is set to meet at 11 AM today to offer condolences, and Dr. Singh’s last rites will be conducted with full state honors.

Additionally, the Karnataka Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced a state holiday on December 27, joining the nation in mourning the loss of one of India’s most respected leaders.

A Nation Pays Tribute

Political leaders across party lines, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, expressed their deep condolences on Dr. Singh’s passing.

AIIMS Delhi issued an official statement detailing the timeline of events:
“With profound grief, we inform the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26, 2024. Despite resuscitative measures and immediate medical intervention at AIIMS, Dr. Singh could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.”

Legacy of Leadership

Born in 1932 in Punjab, Dr. Manmohan Singh served as Prime Minister of India for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014. A celebrated economist and visionary leader, he played a pivotal role in shaping India’s economic policies and global positioning.

Singh took office in 2004, following Congress’s victory against the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. Known for his calm demeanor and reform-driven leadership, he was succeeded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014.

After a 33-year tenure in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Singh retired earlier this year, leaving behind an indelible legacy in Indian politics and governance.

The nation will bid farewell to Dr. Singh with state honors and ceremonial protocols, ensuring that his immense contributions to India’s development are remembered and celebrated.
