DGCA caps seat charges, mandates 60% free seats on flights
March 18, 2026: In a major relief for air travellers, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed airlines to limit seat selection charges and make at least 60 percent of seats free on every flight. The order, implemented through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, aims to curb extra fees and make flying more passenger-friendly, especially after complaints about charges for basic seat preferences during booking and check-in.
The new rules also prioritise convenience for families and groups. Airlines must now seat passengers under the same PNR together, preferably in adjacent seats, without additional charges. This step addresses a long-standing issue where travellers had to pay extra to sit with family, turning a basic service into a paid add-on.
The ministry has further asked airlines to clearly define policies for carrying pets, sports equipment, and musical instruments, ensuring transparency and safety compliance. With India emerging as the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market, the move is part of a broader push to enhance passenger experience through initiatives focused on affordability, accessibility, and convenience.
