Fuel, LPG Supply Stable Despite Strait Of Hormuz Tensions
Petroleum Ministry urges consumers not to panic-book cylinders as supply chain remains under control
March 11, 2026: India’s fuel and LPG supplies remain stable despite concerns over rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, the Petroleum Ministry said on Wednesday. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said the country’s energy supply chain is under control and urged consumers not to rush into panic LPG bookings. She noted that India imports crude oil from nearly 40 countries and has diversified its supply routes, helping maintain steady availability of fuel across the country.
According to Sharma, India requires about 5.5 million barrels of crude oil per day to meet normal demand. Nearly 70 per cent of crude imports are now arriving through alternative routes, up from around 55 per cent earlier, reducing dependence on any single corridor. While 47.4 per cent of imported natural gas supplies have been affected, two cargo shipments are already on the way and domestic gas production has been increased. The government said CNG supply will continue at 100 per cent levels, while industrial consumers may receive between 65 and 80 per cent of their gas requirements depending on availability.
India imports about 60 per cent of its LPG needs, with nearly 90 per cent of those shipments usually passing through the Strait of Hormuz. To prevent disruption, the government has increased domestic LPG production by about 25 per cent and diverted supplies for household consumption. In Delhi, the price of a domestic LPG cylinder currently stands at Rs 913 after a recent Rs 60 hike, though beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana continue to receive subsidised cylinders. Officials said deliveries are being maintained within about two and a half days of booking and urged citizens to avoid panic as authorities continue monitoring the situation.
