G7 Condemns Pahalgam Terror Attack, Urges India and Pakistan to Show Restraint

G7 nations call for immediate de-escalation and dialogue; US steps up diplomatic outreach to avoid further conflict

New Delhi [India], May 10: The G7 countries — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union — have issued a joint statement condemning the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. The group also called for restraint and dialogue between India and Pakistan amid rising cross-border tensions.

“We, the G7 Foreign Ministers… strongly condemn the egregious terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and urge maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan,” the statement read.

Expressing deep concern over the potential for further military escalation, the G7 stressed the need to safeguard civilian lives on both sides of the border.
“Further military escalation poses a serious threat to regional stability. We are deeply concerned for the safety of civilians on both sides,” the statement added.

The group urged immediate de-escalation and encouraged both nations to pursue direct diplomatic engagement for a peaceful resolution.
“We call for immediate de-escalation and encourage both countries to engage in direct dialogue towards a peaceful outcome. We continue to monitor events closely and express our support for a swift and lasting diplomatic resolution.”

Meanwhile, US White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the Biden administration’s commitment to easing tensions between India and Pakistan. She stated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been actively engaged with leaders of both countries.

“The President wants to see this de-escalate as quickly as possible,” Leavitt said during a press briefing.
She acknowledged the long-standing nature of the India-Pakistan conflict but emphasized the US’s diplomatic channels remain open and engaged.
“Secretary Rubio has been in constant communication with both governments, working to bring this conflict to an end,” she added.

The statements come in the wake of Operation Sindoor, India’s precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK, following the Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistan’s subsequent drone and missile activity along the LoC and International Border have further raised tensions.
