Gaurav Gogoi Calls Himanta Sarma’s Allegations a ‘Super Flop’
Congress MP hits back at Assam CM over Pakistan link claims as political war of words intensifies
February 8, 2026: Congress MP and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, launched a sharp counterattack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, dismissing his press conference alleging Gogoi’s links with Pakistan as a “super flop”. Taking to X, Gogoi said journalists in Delhi and Assam were forced to sit through what he called “the worst press conference of the century”, even comparing it unfavourably to “C-grade cinema”. He accused Sarma of making absurd and completely false claims, alleging that the press briefing was an attempt to divert attention from serious issues.
Gogoi claimed the Chief Minister’s remarks stood in contrast to what he described as the Congress party’s “journey of exposing the truth”. He alleged that while Sarma was making baseless accusations, the Congress had highlighted the alleged occupation of nearly 12,000 bighas of land by the Chief Minister and his family members. The comments come amid an escalating political row after Sarma revived allegations about Gogoi’s purported association with Pakistan, citing a photograph that allegedly showed the Congress MP visiting the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi along with a group of youths.
Escalating the controversy, Sarma invoked the Kargil war and questioned Gogoi’s intentions, claiming the visit amounted to an attempt to legitimise Pakistan. He announced that the matter would be referred to the Ministry of Home Affairs and named Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colburn, and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh in the alleged case. The heated exchange reflects the intensifying political battle in Assam, with the confrontation now spilling onto the national stage.
