Over 269 million people lifted out of extreme poverty since 2011-12; major progress attributed to targeted welfare schemes, rural development, and inclusive infrastructure under NDA governance.
New Delhi | June 7, 2025: In a landmark development, India’s extreme poverty rate has declined dramatically to 5.3% in 2022-23 from 27.1% in 2011-12, according to the latest World Bank report. This translates to over 269 million people rising out of extreme poverty over 11 years.

In 2011-12, approximately 344.47 million Indians lived below the $3.00/day international poverty line (adjusted to 2021 prices). As per the report, that number dropped to just 75.24 million by 2022-23.
Key Highlights of the Report:
- 269 million people lifted out of extreme poverty between 2011-12 and 2022-23.
- Rural poverty dropped from 18.4% to 2.8%, while urban poverty declined from 10.7% to 1.1%.
- Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh—which housed 65% of India’s extreme poor in 2011-12—contributed to two-thirds of the total decline.
- As per the older $2.15/day benchmark (2017 prices), India’s poverty rate fell from 16.2% to 2.3%, with 33.66 million now below that line compared to 205.93 million in 2011.
Multidimensional Poverty Also Declining
India has also achieved notable success in reducing multidimensional poverty:
- MPI fell from 53.8% in 2005-06 to 15.5% in 2022-23.
- The decline reflects improvements in health, education, and living standards.
Government Initiatives Driving the Change
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking 11 years of NDA governance, attributed this progress to transformative welfare initiatives, including:
- PM Awas Yojana (housing)
- PM Ujjwala Yojana (clean cooking fuel)
- Jan Dhan Yojana (financial inclusion)
- Ayushman Bharat (universal health coverage)
- Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and digital infrastructure for targeted delivery
These programs, according to the report and official statements, have enhanced access to basic services, reduced leakages, and enabled last-mile delivery, helping 25 crore people escape poverty.
