The Gujarat High Court on Friday extended temporary bail by three months to Asaram, the controversial self-styled godman currently serving life imprisonment in a rape case, citing medical reasons.

The decision comes as his earlier Supreme Court-granted interim bail (valid till March 31) nears its end. At 86, Asaram is reportedly undergoing Panchakarma Ayurvedic therapy in Jodhpur.
The bail plea came up before a two-judge bench — Justice Ilesh J Vora supported bail, while Justice Sandeep Bhatt rejected the plea. The matter was escalated to a third judge, Justice A S Supehia, who sided with granting bail after reviewing medical records.

“The treatment has just begun and needs three more months,” argued senior advocate Shalin Mehta, representing Asaram.
Justice Supehia noted that Asaram had not fully recovered and had not misused previous bail, justifying the extension.
The Gujarat government’s counsel, Hardik Dave, didn’t oppose treatment but asked the court to verify its necessity before granting an extension.
As per current procedure, Asaram will also need to approach the Rajasthan High Court for bail in the Jodhpur case to avoid returning to jail on April 1.
