Health Alert! Delhi Reports 23 New Covid Cases: What’s Behind the Sudden Rise?

Delhi’s mild surge in Covid cases mirrors patterns across India, linked to the JN.1 variant and its sublineages.

May 24, 2025 | Delhi has reported 23 fresh Covid-19 cases, prompting city hospitals to activate emergency resources like beds, oxygen, and critical equipment. Health minister Pankaj Singh assured the public that most infections are mild, with no current strain on hospital capacity.

What’s causing the rise?

The surge is driven by the Omicron sub-variant JN.1 and its offshoots LF.7 and NB.1.8, which have been rapidly spreading in parts of Asia like Singapore and Hong Kong. However, health authorities stress that these variants do not appear to cause more severe illness.

Delhi’s Covid advisory:

Hospitals have been told to:
✅ Ensure ventilators, oxygen concentrators, and Bi-PAPs are functional.
✅ Send positive samples for genome sequencing to detect new variants.
✅ Report daily on Delhi’s health data management portal.

Why the worry despite mild cases?

India is closely watching for any signs of severe disease, following global patterns of sudden upticks in mild infections due to waning immunity. Delhi has also seen a minor surge amid pre-monsoon weather, raising concerns about the seasonal flu overlap.

What officials say:

➡️ Union Health Ministry: “Nearly all cases in India currently are mild, not requiring hospitalisation. Genome sequencing and monitoring are being prioritised.”
➡️ Singapore Health Ministry: “The current spike isn’t linked to increased severity or mortality.”
