Heavy Rain and Dust Storm Lash Delhi-NCR, Flight Operations Disrupted

The sudden weather change brought down temperatures sharply but led to widespread waterlogging and major delays at Delhi airport.

New Delhi | May 2, 2025:
Strong winds, a dust storm, and heavy rainfall swept through Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) early Friday morning, bringing much-needed relief from the heat but causing significant disruption to travel and daily life.

“Some of our flights to and from Delhi are being delayed or diverted. We are doing our best to minimize disruptions,” Air India said on X.

City Faces Chaos Amid Cooling Showers

Several areas reported waterlogging, particularly Minto Road, South Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Dwarka, Khanpur, and Moti Bagh. A truck was seen stuck under the infamous Minto Bridge underpass, a repeat scene during heavy rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported wind speeds of up to 70-80 km/h, causing trees and branches to fall across the city. Though no major property damage has been confirmed, residents were advised to remain indoors.

Friday morning’s temperature dropped to 19.8°C, a stark contrast to Wednesday’s high of 38.1°C, just under the seasonal average.

Yellow Alert Issued, More Rain Expected

The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi through Saturday, warning of continued thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds.

Forecasts also indicate moderate rain across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh.

In a broader update, IMD said that north India is likely to witness above-normal rainfall in May, with frequent storms expected to keep temperatures lower than May 2024.
