Heavy Rainfall Brings Mumbai to a Standstill: Flooded Roads, Fallen Trees, Disrupted Trains

Weather alerts issued as Mumbai, Pune and other parts of Maharashtra face severe pre-monsoon downpours; disruptions include train halts, waterlogged roads, and power outages.

Mumbai, May 21, 2025 – Unseasonal heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning wreaked havoc across Mumbai, Pune, and other parts of Maharashtra on Tuesday. While the showers provided a brief respite from the summer heat, they caused significant traffic jams, waterlogging, and transport disruptions across multiple regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for the state, warning of similar weather conditions for the next four days, starting Wednesday. The alerts follow the development of a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea, expected to intensify by May 22.
