
Heavy Rainfall Brings Mumbai to a Standstill: Flooded Roads, Fallen Trees, Disrupted Trains
Mumbai, May 21, 2025 – Unseasonal heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning wreaked havoc across Mumbai, Pune, and other parts of Maharashtra on Tuesday. While the showers provided a brief respite from the summer heat, they caused significant traffic jams, waterlogging, and transport disruptions across multiple regions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for the state, warning of similar weather conditions for the next four days, starting Wednesday. The alerts follow the development of a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea, expected to intensify by May 22.

In Mumbai, the rains led to flooded underpasses, particularly in Andheri, and traffic congestion in key areas like Powai. A large tree fell near the Jalvayu Complex, disrupting local commute and forcing authorities to divert traffic. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were deployed to manage water removal operations using drainage machines.
In Pune, heavy rainfall led to water leakage at the airport, with locals blaming overflowing, clogged drains. Airlines such as SpiceJet issued advisories on delays and cancellations. “Due to bad weather in Pune (PNQ), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected,” the airline posted on X (formerly Twitter).
