49 Rescued So Far, Several Injured as ITBP, Army, and NDRF Battle Extreme Conditions in Chamoli
Chamoli, March 1: At least three workers rescued from the massive avalanche that struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district have sustained serious head injuries and fractures, according to Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officials.
The disaster, which buried a General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) camp near Mana village, left 55 workers trapped under snow.
“Two to three people are in critical condition with fractures and head injuries. They are admitted to Joshimath Hospital. Eight individuals are still missing, and we are hopeful they will be rescued by this evening,” said ITBP Commandant Vijay Kumar P.
Rescue Teams Work Tirelessly to Save Trapped Workers
So far, 49 people have been pulled out, while search efforts continue for the remaining eight. With roads blocked due to heavy snowfall, four Army helicopters have been deployed for rescue operations.

🔹 Senior officials, including the IG and DIG, are monitoring the situation closely.
🔹 More than a dozen workers have been safely transported to Joshimath for treatment.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami Visits Injured Workers
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met the injured BRO workers and assured that rescue teams are doing everything possible to bring back the remaining trapped individuals safely.
“We are trying to rescue all those who are still trapped as soon as possible. The 14 workers rescued today are safe and being treated in Joshimath,” said CM Dhami.
Medical Teams on High Alert
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed that the rescued workers are under doctors’ observation, with three of them now stable.
“…We have brought seven people to Joshimath Hospital for treatment. I hope that the remaining workers will also be rescued soon,” Tiwari added.

With extreme weather conditions making rescue efforts challenging, officials remain hopeful of saving the remaining workers before nightfall. Rescue teams are working tirelessly, with more updates expected soon.
