How One Phone Call Led Cops to Nikita Singhania After Atul Subhash’s Suicide

Nikita’s daily location changes, WhatsApp calls, and legal manoeuvres failed as police tracked her down to Gurugram.

December 16, 2024: Bengaluru: In a meticulously planned operation, Bengaluru police tracked down Nikita Singhania, the estranged wife of techie Atul Subhash, who died by suicide, sparking a case of abetment. Despite Nikita’s daily location changes, exclusive reliance on WhatsApp calls, and efforts to secure anticipatory bail, one phone call betrayed her location.

According to police sources, Nikita, along with her mother Nisha Singhania and brother Anurag Singhania, went into hiding immediately after Atul’s death. Their home in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur was locked, prompting police to paste notices urging their surrender. While Nisha and Anurag hid in Prayagraj, Nikita moved to a PG accommodation in Gurugram’s Rail Vihar.

The One Mistake

Throughout their evasion, the Singhanias communicated strictly through WhatsApp calls to avoid detection. However, Nikita made one crucial error — a regular phone call to a close relative. Police tracked the tower location, leading them to Nikita’s PG in Gurugram. After detaining her, police used her phone to contact her mother. Nisha and Anurag were soon located in Jhusi town, Prayagraj, and taken into custody.

Quiet Transit to Bengaluru

Given the public outrage surrounding Atul Subhash’s death, police executed a discreet late-night transfer. Ensuring no co-passengers recognized the accused during their flight, authorities quietly brought Nikita and her family to Bengaluru. Upon arrival, they underwent medical examination before being presented at the magistrate’s residence and remanded to judicial custody.

Nikita’s Defense

During police interrogation, Nikita denied harassing Atul, claiming she herself was mistreated. She added that she wouldn’t have left their home if she was motivated by money. This contradicts Atul’s 24-page suicide note and 80-minute video, where he accused Nikita and her family of false dowry and cruelty cases intended to extort ₹3 crore.

Outrage and Investigation

Atul Subhash’s tragic death at his Bengaluru residence last Monday led to his family filing a suicide abetment case. Preliminary investigations revealed Atul had planned his death weeks prior, extensively researching legal matters and penning his note days in advance. Meanwhile, Atul’s family has sought custody of his four-year-old son, now in the care of a relative.
