IMD Issues Pan-India Weather Alert: Heavy Rains for South, Northeast; Heatwave in North and Central India

From thunderstorms in Delhi to torrential rains in Karnataka and a heatwave in Rajasthan, the week ahead brings diverse weather extremes across India

May 19, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert forecasting significant rainfall across southern and northeastern regions while parts of North and Central India brace for a prolonged heatwave.

Delhi Weather: Light Rain and Thunderstorms Expected

Delhi residents can expect partly cloudy skies with intermittent light rainfall and thunderstorms over the coming days. Gusty winds up to 50 kmph may accompany these weather systems, with maximum temperatures hovering around 38–40°C and minimums between 27–29°C.

South India to Witness Persistent Heavy Showers

The IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall across Peninsular India, particularly:

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal: May 18–20
  • Kerala, Mahe, Coastal and North Interior Karnataka: May 18–24
  • Rayalaseema: May 18–20
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam: May 20–22
  • Extremely heavy rainfall: Coastal Karnataka on May 20

Thunder squalls reaching wind speeds of 60–70 kmph are expected over Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada from May 20–23.

Northeast India on High Alert for Rainfall

States like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Nagaland will receive heavy rainfall between May 18–24. Very heavy downpours are likely in Assam and Meghalaya during May 18–20.

Himalayan Belt: Isolated Hailstorms and Rain

Hailstorms are likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on May 19 and 20. Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, is expected over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from May 18–20.

Heatwave to Scorch Northern Plains

Meanwhile, West Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and North Madhya Pradesh will experience intense heatwave conditions:

  • West Rajasthan: May 16–22
  • Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir: May 16–17
  • North Madhya Pradesh: May 18–19

India is set for a week of volatile weather with the South and Northeast under rainfall alert while much of the North and Central regions contend with heatwaves. IMD has advised local authorities to prepare for possible disruptions.
