India Bids Farewell to Former PM Manmohan Singh: Tributes from PM Modi, Leaders
New Delhi, December 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, describing him as “one of India’s most distinguished leaders.” Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, reflecting on Dr. Singh’s immense contributions to India’s economic growth and governance.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed his condolences and highlighted Dr. Singh’s impactful legacy.
“India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist and served in various government positions, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” PM Modi wrote.
He also recalled their working relationship when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat during Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister:
“We would have extensive deliberations on various subjects relating to governance. His wisdom and humility were always visible. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and countless admirers. Om Shanti.”
BJP President JP Nadda described Dr. Singh’s demise as a significant loss for the nation.
“A visionary statesman and a stalwart of Indian politics, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji consistently worked for the welfare of the downtrodden. His legacy will continue to inspire generations in their pursuit of nation-building,” Nadda wrote.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha also paid heartfelt tribute, acknowledging Singh’s role in India’s economic transformation.
“A world-renowned economist, Dr. Manmohan Singh steered India through difficult times and into a new era. His legacy will endure and inspire generations to come. I consider myself blessed to have worked alongside him in the Rajya Sabha. RIP, Sir. Om Shanti,” Chadha shared on X.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, born in Punjab in 1932, served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms (2004–2014). Known as the architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms, his tenure saw significant advancements in economic stability, foreign policy, and social welfare programs.
After retiring from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year following 33 years of service, Singh leaves behind a legacy marked by integrity, humility, and transformative leadership.
The nation has declared seven days of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast and all official events canceled. Singh’s last rites will be conducted with full state honors on Saturday, reflecting the nation’s gratitude for his contributions.
As India bids farewell to one of its most respected leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s contributions to the nation will be remembered for generations to come.
