India Fuel Supply Stable, Govt Urges Calm

Petroleum Ministry says refineries running at full capacity, LPG concerns being addressed

March 13, 2026: India’s fuel supply remains secure and there is no need for panic, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said on Friday. Addressing a press briefing in New Delhi, Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma said the country’s refineries are operating at full capacity and maintaining adequate crude oil inventories. She noted that India has a refining capacity of about 258 million metric tons and is self-sufficient in the production of petrol and diesel.

Sharma said all refineries across India are currently functioning at 100 per cent capacity or higher, ensuring a steady fuel supply across petrol pumps. She also assured that the supply of PNG (Piped Natural Gas) and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) remains uninterrupted, with domestic and transport sectors continuing to receive gas without any cuts.

However, the official acknowledged that some commercial users in major urban centres are facing challenges due to their dependence on LPG supplies. The government, she said, is working to address these concerns and has urged affected businesses to approach their local City Gas Distribution networks to obtain PNG connections as an alternative.
