Indian-Origin Security Guard Shot Dead in Canada: Second Tragic Death in a Week
December 8, 2024: A 20-year-old Indian-origin man, Harshandeep Singh, was tragically shot dead while on duty as a security guard in Edmonton, Canada, on Friday. This marks the second death of an Indian-origin individual in Canada within a week, raising concerns among the community.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) responded to reports of gunshots inside an apartment building around 12:30 a.m. Upon arrival at the scene on 107 Avenue, they found Harshandeep Singh unresponsive in a stairwell. Despite first-aid efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
CCTV footage circulating online reveals the harrowing incident. A three-member gang is seen attacking Singh, with one individual pushing him down the stairs while another shoots him from behind.
Two suspects, Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux, both 30 years old, have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Police have recovered a weapon, and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
EPS Homicide Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey stated in a press release, “The EPS typically does not release the names of deceased individuals unless their death is confirmed to be a homicide. However, we are releasing Harshandeep Singh’s name for investigative purposes and to alleviate public safety concerns.”
This tragedy follows the death of 22-year-old Gurasis Singh, another Indian-origin man, who was fatally stabbed on December 1 in Sarnia, Ontario. A first-year business management student at Lambton College, Gurasis was killed during a kitchen altercation with his housemate, 36-year-old Crossley Hunter. Hunter has been charged with second-degree murder.
The back-to-back incidents have sparked concern within the Indian diaspora in Canada, highlighting the need for increased safety measures and vigilance.
