India’s Covid-19 Cases Climb to Nearly 3,000: Kerala, Maharashtra Worst-Hit

The latest surge sees Kerala reporting the highest number of cases, with authorities urging vigilance but no panic as infections remain mild.

June 1, 2025: India’s active Covid-19 cases have surged to nearly 3,000, with Kerala leading the surge followed by Maharashtra and Delhi. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of cases jumped from 1,010 on May 26 to 2,710 by May 30—a nearly three-fold increase within four days.

Worst-hit states:

  • Kerala: 1,147 cases
  • Maharashtra: 424 cases
  • Delhi: 294 cases
  • Gujarat: 223 cases
  • Tamil Nadu & Karnataka: 148 each
  • West Bengal: 116 cases

Other states, including Rajasthan (51), Uttar Pradesh (42), and Haryana (20), have also reported cases, while no active cases have been found in Andaman and Nicobar, Sikkim, and Himachal Pradesh. Official data for Bihar is pending.

Recent Deaths & Severity
At least seven people have died recently across the country, mostly senior citizens with other health issues. Maharashtra and Delhi have reported two deaths linked to pre-existing conditions, but it’s unclear if Covid-19 was the primary cause in other cases.

Health officials, however, assure that most infections are mild in nature, and there is no immediate cause for panic. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl urged people to be vigilant but not alarmed, advising enhanced precautions only for those with underlying health issues.

Variant Update
India’s most common Covid-19 variant remains JN.1 (53%), followed by BA.2 (26%) and other Omicron sublineages (20%). Notably, recent cases include at least one instance of the highly contagious NB.1.8.1 variant and four cases of the LF.7 variant—both classified by WHO as Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs), not as Variants of Concern (VOCs).

What’s Next?
Although these newer subvariants have driven recent Covid surges in China and parts of Asia, India’s health agencies are closely watching the situation. The public is advised to maintain basic hygiene, mask usage in crowded spaces, and vaccinations—especially for vulnerable groups.
