IndiGo Suspends Kathmandu Flights Amid Nepal Unrest
New Delhi, September 10: As political unrest intensifies in Nepal, IndiGo Airlines has suspended all flights to and from Kathmandu until 12:00 pm on September 10, citing the closure of Kathmandu Airport due to ongoing Gen Z protests.
“All flights to and from Kathmandu stand cancelled until 1200 hrs on September 10. If your travel plans are impacted, you may opt for an alternate flight or claim a refund through our website,” the airline said in its advisory.
In an effort to minimize disruption, IndiGo announced a waiver on rescheduling and cancellations for passengers scheduled to travel to or from Kathmandu until September 12. The waiver applies to bookings made on or before September 9.
“Our teams remain on standby, closely monitoring developments around the clock, and will continue to share timely updates as soon as operations are cleared to resume. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding. Your safety and peace of mind remain our top priority,” IndiGo added.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has stepped up its watch on the crisis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security soon after returning from an aerial survey of flood-hit Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
Sharing his concern on X, PM Modi wrote:
“The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace, and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace.”
The crisis stems from anti-government protests that erupted after Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation. Over the past two days, the Gen Z–led demonstrations have spiraled into deadly clashes, leaving at least 19 dead and more than 500 injured.
In Kathmandu, protesters torched several government buildings, including the Parliament. Clashes around the Federal Parliament have been especially fierce, underscoring the growing frustration among Nepal’s youth who are demanding reforms, accountability, and stability.
For India, Nepal’s unrest is more than just a neighbor’s crisis—it threatens regional peace and security. With deep cultural, economic, and strategic ties, India has reiterated that the prosperity of Nepal is essential for South Asia’s balance.
Both the government and airlines continue to monitor the evolving situation, with safety and stability remaining the highest priority.
