Indore Highway Chaos: 32-Hour Jam Leaves 3 Dead, Thousands Stranded Overnight

Narrow service lane, waterlogging, and poor planning lead to massive gridlock on Indore-Dewas route amid heavy rain alert.

Indore, June 29, 2025 — In a shocking incident that exposed serious flaws in infrastructure planning and emergency response, a 32-hour-long traffic jam on the Indore-Dewas highway left three people dead and thousands of commuters stranded overnight.

The massive congestion began Thursday evening when vehicles were diverted to a narrow service road due to ongoing construction and severe waterlogging from relentless rains. The jam persisted into Friday night, with no immediate relief.

The India Meteorological Department had issued orange and yellow alerts for several parts of Madhya Pradesh, including Indore, earlier this week. However, lack of preparation and limited alternative routes through nearby villages made the situation worse.

Victims of Delay

Among the deceased was 32-year-old Sandeep Patel, who suffered a fatal heart attack while being rushed to a hospital. Trapped in traffic, his condition deteriorated quickly and he was declared dead upon arrival.

Two other victims — 62-year-old Kamal Panchal and 55-year-old Balram Patel — also died after prolonged exposure to stress and exhaustion during the jam.

Kamal Panchal’s son recounted the ordeal: “We were stuck for over an hour. My father began feeling uneasy and fainted in the car. He didn’t survive the delay.”

Poor Planning, High Cost

Local authorities have come under criticism for failing to anticipate the pressure on the service road and not arranging detours through nearby villages. Eyewitnesses reported lack of traffic personnel, no emergency medical assistance, and a complete absence of water or food supplies for stranded families.

Calls have grown louder for accountability and immediate action to improve infrastructure readiness during monsoons.
