Injuries Mar Alanganallur Jallikattu

14 hurt as iconic bull-taming event continues amid tight security ahead of Pongal 2026

January 17, 2026: At least 14 people were injured during the famed Jallikattu event at Alanganallur in Tamil Nadu, with four sustaining serious injuries and requiring hospitalisation. The incidents occurred amid intense bull-taming action as thousands of spectators gathered to witness the traditional sport on the eve of the Pongal 2026 harvest festival. Despite the injuries, the competition continued with heightened medical preparedness and emergency teams on standby.

The prestigious Alanganallur Jallikattu was formally inaugurated by Minister Murthy and unfolded in a festive yet charged atmosphere. With events at Avaniyapuram and Palamedu already concluded, Alanganallur emerged as the centre of Pongal celebrations, drawing crowds from across the state and beyond. Authorities said safety protocols were in place, while acknowledging the inherent risks associated with the physically demanding sport.

The event witnessed participation from around 1,100 bulls and nearly 600 bullfighters, reflecting its massive scale and popularity. Heavy police security was deployed as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is scheduled to attend, along with ministers, MLAs and film personalities. Organisers announced attractive prizes, including a car for the top bull tamer, a tractor for the best bull owner, and several other rewards such as motorcycles, gold coins and household items.
