Authorities extend mobile internet shutdown in five districts amid fears of unrest and misinformation.

April 12, 2026: The government of Manipur has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services, including VPN access, in five districts for another two days as tensions continue following recent violence. The restrictions remain in place across Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur after clashes earlier this week left two people dead and 29 injured. The violence reportedly erupted after a mob stormed a paramilitary camp in Bishnupur, protesting the deaths of two children in an explosion.

Officials said the decision was taken to maintain public order and prevent the spread of misinformation through platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Authorities warned that rumours circulating online could trigger further unrest, arson, or damage to property. While broadband services have been partially restored under strict conditions, mobile data restrictions continue due to monitoring challenges.

The ethnic conflict in Manipur, ongoing since May 2023, has claimed over 260 lives and displaced around 60,000 people. The violence initially broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities, leading to deep divisions and the creation of buffer zones by security forces. With tensions still high, the government is prioritising preventive measures to avoid further escalation.
