IRCTC Cuts LPG Use In Canteens

Rail kitchens told to switch to microwaves, induction amid gas shortage

March 11, 2026: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has directed railway canteens across India to reduce their reliance on LPG cylinders and shift to alternative cooking methods such as microwaves and induction cookers. The move comes amid ongoing LPG supply disruptions and aims to ensure uninterrupted food services at railway stations nationwide. Officials said domestic LPG consumers will be given priority, making it necessary for large-scale operations like railway kitchens to adopt alternative arrangements.

IRCTC said the directive is a preventive step to maintain smooth operations across its vast network of kitchens serving passengers every day. Canteen operators have also been asked to prepare contingency plans to deal with any emergency situations related to fuel shortages so that food services at railway stations remain unaffected.

The impact of LPG scarcity is already being felt in several cities, including Patna, where residents are reportedly facing long waiting periods while booking gas cylinders. Online systems in some areas are showing delays of up to 21–25 days, adding to consumer frustration. The latest move by IRCTC highlights the growing pressure on domestic energy supplies and the need for institutions to adapt quickly during supply disruptions.
