Jallikattu Kicks Off in Madurai for Pongal 2026

Over 1,100 bulls, 550 tamers take part as iconic bull-taming sport begins under tight security

January 15, 2026: The traditional bull-taming sport Jallikattu, the first of the three major events marking the Pongal 2026 harvest festival, commenced on Thursday in Madurai with around 550 bull tamers showcasing their skills. Nearly 1,100 bulls and tamers have registered online to participate in the three-day festival held in mid-January, which draws massive crowds and nationwide attention every year.

Madurai is hosting the opening leg of the event, followed by competitions at Palamedu on January 16 and Alanganallur on January 17, which will serve as the grand finale. Winners—both the best tamer and the best bull—will be rewarded with attractive prizes, including cars, tractors and other gifts, adding to the excitement surrounding the centuries-old tradition.

The event was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister P Moorthi in the presence of Madurai district Collector Pravin Kumar and senior officials. To ensure safety and smooth conduct, more than 2,200 police personnel have been deployed across the venue, reflecting heightened security arrangements for one of Tamil Nadu’s most celebrated cultural spectacles.
