JeM Bunker Found at 12,000 Feet in Kishtwar

Well-stocked militant hideout uncovered as counter-terror operation continues

January 20, 2026: Security forces have uncovered a heavily fortified militant bunker at nearly 12,000 feet in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, allegedly used by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) operatives. Officials said the hideout was stocked with food and essentials such as Maggi noodles, rice, vegetables, spices, gas cylinders and firewood, indicating preparation for surviving the region’s harsh winter. Built in a Kargil-style design with stone-reinforced walls and concealed access points, the bunker was camouflaged to evade surveillance, raising concerns over a strong militant logistics network and possible local support.

Security agencies believe the bunker was being used by JeM commander Saifullah, a Pakistani national, and his deputy Adil. The scale of construction and provisioning at such a remote and inhospitable altitude suggested plans for a prolonged stay, even during periods when heavy snowfall cuts off access routes. Investigators said erecting and maintaining such infrastructure would have required assistance on the ground, intensifying suspicion of an active overground support system in the area.

The bunker was discovered during an ongoing counter-terror operation in the Chatroo belt’s Sonnar village, where an encounter broke out after troops established contact with militants. During the exchange, terrorists allegedly hurled grenades, injuring eight soldiers; Havildar Gajendra Singh later succumbed to his injuries. Operation Trashi-l has since resumed amid steep terrain and dense vegetation, with the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF deploying drones, sniffer dogs and additional troops to tighten the cordon and prevent militant escape.
