15-year-old Mihir Ahammed faced relentless bullying, including physical and emotional abuse, before tragically taking his life. Celebrities and activists demand justice.

February 2, 2025: A 15-year-old schoolboy from Kochi, Kerala, died by suicide on January 15 after enduring what his family alleges was brutal ragging at his school. The boy, Mihir Ahammed, jumped from the 26th floor of his family’s flat just an hour after returning from school. His mother, Rajna PM, has publicly shared the details of the inhumane bullying her son suffered, demanding justice and accountability from the school and authorities.

A Mother’s Heartbreaking Allegations

In a detailed Instagram post, Mihir’s mother described the horrific treatment her son faced. She claimed Mihir was physically assaulted, verbally abused, and humiliated by a group of students, including being forced to lick a toilet seat and having his head pushed into the toilet while it was flushed. She further alleged that Mihir faced bullying due to his skin color, with shocking messages surfacing after his death in which students mocked and celebrated his demise.

Efforts to Seek Justice

Rajna has written to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the state police chief, urging an impartial probe. She also approached the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Despite her efforts, she alleges that the school is attempting to cover up the incident to protect its reputation. The Instagram page “Justice for Mihir,” created by his friends to spread awareness, was reportedly deleted under pressure from the school administration.

“I fear delays in gathering digital evidence may allow the culprits to erase their tracks,” said Rajna. She also alleged harassment by the school’s vice-principal, adding to the family’s anguish.

Government and Celebrity Reactions

Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has also taken note of Mihir’s tragic death.

Prominent celebrities, including actors Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Keerthy Suresh, have expressed their grief and anger. Samantha described the incident as “a reminder that bullying and ragging are not harmless traditions but violence.” Prithviraj called for schools to prioritize empathy as the first lesson, while Keerthy condemned the culture of ragging that starts as early as school.

The Need for Change

Mihir’s death has reignited discussions about bullying and ragging in educational institutions. Despite stringent anti-ragging laws, such incidents continue to claim young lives. Advocates and activists are calling for systemic reforms to ensure student safety and stricter enforcement of anti-bullying measures.
