Key Highway Linking Assam and Meghalaya Washed Away as Northeast Battles Rain Fury

NH-17 in Boko and Chaygaon collapses under intense floodwaters, severing vital road connectivity between Tura and Guwahati.

Torrential rain and relentless flooding have caused widespread devastation across the northeast, cutting off critical road networks. National Highway 17 (NH-17), a key link between Assam and Meghalaya, has been severely damaged, with vital stretches washed away in Boko and Chaygaon.

The collapse of the newly constructed portion of NH-17 near the Shingra Reserve Forest area, about 70 km from Guwahati, has stranded dozens of trucks and heavy vehicles. Smaller vehicles are being forced to reroute through Bongaigaon to navigate the washed-away section.

Widespread Destruction and Loss of Life
The northeast has been grappling with landslides and flash floods over the last two days, claiming at least 30 lives. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram have all been affected.

In Arunachal Pradesh, nine people—including seven members of two families—died in flash floods and landslides. In one tragic incident, a Brezza car was swept into a deep gorge on NH-13 near Bana and Seppa, killing everyone inside.

In Assam, five people have died in landslides triggered by heavy rainfall, with all fatalities reported in the Kamrup Metropolitan district. Floods have impacted over 60,000 people across 12 districts.

Weather Alerts Issued
The India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for parts of Assam and an orange and yellow alert for the rest of the northeast, signaling continued risk of extreme weather.
