Tejasvi Surya flags supply concerns as government prioritises household gas
March 10, 2026: The impact of the escalating West Asia conflict is being felt in Bengaluru, where restaurants and hotels are facing a potential shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The issue has raised concerns within the hospitality sector, with some eateries reportedly shutting operations due to limited availability of commercial gas cylinders. Tejasvi Surya, BJP MP from Bengaluru South, has written to Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, urging the government to ensure uninterrupted LPG supply for the hospitality industry.
In his letter, Surya conveyed concerns raised by the Bangalore Hotels Association, which warned that restaurants and hotels rely heavily on commercial LPG for daily kitchen operations. The association said most commercial kitchens currently lack large-scale alternatives such as piped natural gas (PNG) or electric cooking systems. Any disruption in supply, it noted, could affect restaurant operations, employment in the sector and services provided to consumers across the city.
Responding to the supply concerns, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed oil refineries to increase LPG production, with additional output primarily allocated for household consumption. The government has also introduced a 25-day inter-booking period to prevent hoarding and black marketing, stressing that domestic LPG supply remains the top priority amid global energy disruptions linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis.
