LPG Shortage Sparks Political Row

Opposition warns of supply crisis as government assures stable cooking gas availability

March 10, 2026: Concerns over a possible cooking gas shortage have triggered a political debate in India, with the Samajwadi Party warning that LPG supply problems could worsen. Party MP Audhesh Prasad said shortages of cylinders in several areas may escalate despite the government forming a panel to review disruptions. He cautioned that the situation could push up inflation and place additional pressure on household budgets if supply issues continue.

Leaders from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, however, linked the pressure on fuel supplies to global tensions. BJP MP Shashank Mani said rising oil prices were being driven by international conflict and stressed that India remains focused on protecting its energy security. The government has also invoked the Essential Commodities Act through the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, to ensure uninterrupted domestic LPG supply.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said refineries have been directed to increase LPG production to stabilise household supply amid disruptions in LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, local officials such as Deoria District Supply Officer Sanjay Kumar Pandey said panic bookings may be temporarily increasing pressure on stocks. Industry groups from the hospitality sector have also flagged shortages of commercial LPG cylinders that could affect restaurant operations.
